Everton Park Junior Bowls Academy a Huge Success
Two years ago there were only two junior bowlers in the whole Brisbane District. How this has all changed with the inception of the Everton Park Junior Bowls Academy. With the academy commencing in mid 2008, Everton Park now has twelve financial junior members with many other kids also joining in during their weekly bowls session. In fact, it is now common to see over 20 juniors at the club from 4pm on Thursday afternoons.
With money raised through fundraising and sponsorship, the junior bowls committee has undertaken to provide assistance by providing shirts, trousers, bucket hat, and name tag to all financial junior members. Nominations for state and district events and Junior/Senior Days are also paid for. The club has also assisted reducing junior green fees to half price.
The hard work and commitment by the coaches and volunteers is starting to reap rewards as the junior bowler’s abilities continue to improve. Everton Park now provides the majority of players to the Brisbane District Junior Bowls team. Although this team has had limited success against the other districts, the fact the average age of the team is 13 means that the team will continue to improve as they get more experienced.
At the recent State Junior Championships, the Everton Park juniors performed extremely well making the semi-finals in both the Boys Triples and Fours Championships. Considering the members of there teams were all 12 and 13 years old, it was a tremendous effort against older and more experienced bowlers. The club also was represented in the semi finals and finals of the Under 15 Boys Pairs Competition.
